Basic Information about Athens

Athens, the capital of Greece, is a city rich in history and innovation, making it an exciting destination. Rapid urbanisation after the Second World War led to a relatively congested central area, with a rapid expansion into the suburbs in recent decades.

4G/5G & Internet: High-speed internet and expanding 4G-5G coverage make it easy for tech professionals to stay connected. Some telecoms “throttle” internet access speeds for visitors. Visitors based in Europe benefit from the EU roaming agreements.

Baggage Storage: We will be able to provide same-day baggage storage at the Megaron if you are arriving or departing and want to leave your suitcase at the entry. We cannot accept overnight storage, however.

Climate: Mediterranean, with mild winters and hot, dry summers. Please be prepared for temperatures which could rise to 40 degrees during the day.

Currency: Euro (€).

Credit Cards: Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted, though cash is useful in smaller businesses. American Express is less popular. It is recommended to have a small quantity of cash in coins and small bills for convenience.

Electricity: Voltage: 230V; Frequency: 50Hz; Plug Types: Type C and Type F. Type C: is Two round prongs (common in Europe). Visitors from the US will likely need a converter, if this is not provided by your electrical equipment. Adapters are widely available.

Emergency Services: Emergency Services are available under 112 (the European Emergency Service Line) or 100 (for the Police). Please consult Your Guide to Greece - Gov.gr.

Language: Greek is the official language, but English is widely spoken all over the city. French and German are also widely spoken.

Metro: Athens has several metro lines, providing a convenient way to get around the city. The Megaron has its own metro station, which adds to its convenience: this line actually connects Athens International Airport (AIA) with Constitution Square (Syntagma). More information from the Athens Transport Co. Here: Athens Transport information in English | Athens Transport

Population: The population of Greater Athens is approximately 3.2 million in the metropolitan area (including suburbs). Some estimates place this higher (depending on which areas are included). We also get over 30 million tourists each year, although not all arrive or depart through Athens. Be prepared for some crowding in early September.

Security: Petty crime in the centre of Athens, particularly around archaeological and tourist sites as well as in the Metro or Bus system may occur. Please keep your bags and backpacks closed; if you are carrying a phone or wallet, ensure it is tucked away; maintain situational awareness at all times. Water: In general, the tap water in Athens in drinkable, although many Athenians prefer bottled water. Bottled water is sold under price controls in most kiosks and supermarkets: a 500 ml bottle is 50 cents; 1 liter is 1 Euro. This does not apply to brands like Perrier or San Pellegrino. When in double, ask the vendor for the cheap water. Make sure you stay hydrated during your stay.

Time Zone: Eastern European Time (EET, UTC+2) and Eastern European Summer Time (EEST, UTC+3) during daylight saving time.

Tipping: Tipping in taxis or restaurants is not necessary but is appreciated. Tips typically range from a couple of Euros to perhaps 10% of the bill, maximum, but it’s up to you.

Value Added Tax (VAT): Greek VAT is on the expensive side. The general bracket is 24%, and applies to most products. The first reduced rate is 13%; the second reduced rate is 5%. More information is available here: Basic VAT rates

Visa Access: Greece is a European Union Member State and is in the Schengen Zone. Please consult the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs Visas for Foreigners traveling to Greece - Hellenic Republic - Ministry of Foreign Affairs or resources in your home country for additional information on visa requirements. You may also contract Mid East Travel for support with your travel arrangements.
