Departure from Athens International Airport (AIA)

Whether you are flying to a nearby European city or heading to an international destination, make sure to plan ahead, arrive early, and stay informed about your flight’s status for a smooth and stress-free experience. More information can be found here: Travellers | AIA.

Athens International Airport has two terminals:

  • Terminal 1 (Main Terminal): Handles international flights and most domestic flights.

  • Terminal 2 (Satellite Terminal): Used mainly for domestic flights or flights with low-cost carriers.

Most passengers will depart from Terminal 1, but make sure to confirm your terminal with your airline, as it can vary. Whether nor not you are leaving from Terminal 1 or 2, you will come to the Main Building of AIA on the Upper Floor (Departures Level). Terminal 2 is accessed via the Main Building: you do not have to go to any other building.

Terminal 1 is split into Area A (non-Schengen Departures) and Area B (Schengen Departures). Terminal 2 is also known as Area C, and is accessed via the Main Terminal by a long underground passageway. Factor at least 10-15 minutes walk to get from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 if you are walking.

Check-In & Security

  • Arriving at the Airport: It’s recommended to arrive at least 2 hours before your European flight and 3 hours before international flights to allow enough time for check-in, security checks, and potential delays.

  • Check-in counters for most airlines open 3 hours before departure.

  • Self-Check-in Kiosks: Many airlines offer self-check-in kiosks for quicker check-ins.

  • Documents: Ensure you have your passport, boarding pass, and any necessary travel documents.

Airport Departure Gates

  • Gate Information: Departure gates are announced after you check in. Be sure to check the flight information screens located throughout the terminal for real-time updates on your gate number.

  • Gate Closing: Be at your departure gate at least 30 minutes before your flight’s departure. Boarding typically begins around 40 minutes before departure.
