Health & Safety

Athens is a relatively safe city with good medical facilities and accessible transport options. By staying aware of your surroundings, following basic health precautions, and knowing emergency contacts, you can enjoy your time in Athens with confidence. Here's an overview of health and safety tips you should know while visiting Athens:

General Safety

Crime: Athens is generally a safe city, but like any major metropolitan area, it's wise to be vigilant, especially in crowded places like Monastiraki and Syntagma Square. Petty crimes like pickpocketing can occasionally occur, particularly in tourist-heavy areas and on public transport.

Personal Belongings: Keep your valuables (phone, wallet, passport) in secure places. Avoid leaving items unattended, especially in cafes, restaurants, and public spaces.

Late Night Safety: If you're out late, use a taxi or ride-sharing app (like Uber or Bolt) instead of walking alone, especially in unfamiliar areas.

Emergency Medical Services

  • Emergency Number: Dial 112 for police, fire, or medical emergencies (this is the EU-wide emergency number).

  • Ambulance Service: In case of urgent medical issues, you can call 166 for an ambulance.

  • Pharmacies: Athens has plenty of 24-hour pharmacies. You can find them in various parts of the city, and many have English-speaking staff.

Medical Insurance

  • Travel Insurance: It's advisable to have travel insurance that covers medical expenses, especially for emergencies.

  • EU Citizens: Those with an EU Health Insurance can receive medical treatment at public hospitals.

  • Non-EU Citizens: Medical services for tourists are available and public and private hospitals. Please check with your insurance provider for the costs of treatment.

Heat & Sun Protection

Summer Heat: Athens can get very hot in the summer, with temperatures sometimes exceeding 40°C (104°F). Ensure to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and protect yourself from the sun with hats and light clothing.
